So How Important are Backlinks for rankings?

by Joshua Unseth on November 29, 2009

A lot of people reading SpiderMarket know exactly how important backlinks are. But I like to do a post every once in a while that pulls in those who aren’t sure what this SEO stuff is all about, or who are wondering how Google’s rankings can be manipulated through organic search tactics. For those of you who are seasoned SEOs or even if you’re just n00b, if you already know the importance of backlinks, you will find this less amusing. You’ll just kind of give it a duh! For those of you who doubt the importance of backlinks, I’ll show you how awesome they are. And for those who are strong moralists, you might find my test a bit gauche. I assure you, it’s meant as humorous.

Anyhow, here it is: I have a friend named Greg. Last year, while sitting around (he was very drunk), he thought it would be funny to name his private area Big Government. Well, recently, there was a site started by Andrew Breitbart called “Big Government”. So, I thought it only appropriate to throw a link with the anchor text Greg’s penis right at it. It’s a phrase with almost no competition. So, one or two links ought to get it to show up. Anyhow, let’s see what happens.

You can watch the rankings of Big Government for the term “Greg’s Penis” by…Googling it…duh!!
