Google’s Suggestion Tool is Getting Better

by Joshua Unseth on November 28, 2009

On Black Friday, my girlfriend brought me to H&M. I did what most guys do. I sat around as she tried on clothes. With nothing better to do, I thought about products that I could sell (were I a fashionista).

When my girlfriend came out of the dressing room, I told her my genius idea. “Grace,” I said, “I think that I have a groundbreaking fashion idea.”

She looked at me a bit sceptically, rolled her eyes, and asked me what it was.

“Fur underwear!” I told her.

No doubt, it’s a terribly stupid idea. But I was curious about whether or not some fashion-idiot had gotten around to inventing it before I had. So, as any SEO would do, I went to Google, began to type f-u-r u-n-d-e-r-w-e-a-r into google. Much to my surprise, Google’s suggestion box dropped down to reveal some curious search possibilities.

I’ve usually preferred using Yahoo’s search suggest tool, but there are some interesting developments in the results for “Fur Underwear”. First (and most surprisingly) Google knew exactly what I was searching for. Yay Google! Second, the results are showing suggestions with words before the beginning of my search phrase. You may be underwhelmed by the latter discovery, but to this point, Google’s suggestion tool has generally only offered results that begin with your search query. So, getting suggestions for faux fur underwear and men’s fur underwear is both surprising and welcome.
