How Important Is SEO?

by Joshua Unseth on May 5, 2009

Search Engine Optimization is really important with regard to your site’s visibility. But if you even know what SEO stands for, chances are you already know that. So, the question is really, how important is it? randfish writes at SEOMoz about how much more money companies spend on pay-per-click campaigns versus SEO. And yet, if you look at the search engine results, great position on search engines garners far more traffic.

On Google’s frontpage, randfish gives the following figures for visibility:
Rank 1 – 100%
Rank 2 – 100%
Rank 3 – 100%
Rank 4 – 85%
Rank 5 – 60%
Rank 6 – 50%
Rank 7 – 50%
Rank 8 – 30%
Rank 9 – 30%
Rank 10 – 20%

Basically, you will obtain five times more clicks per day if you are ranked number one than you will if your site is the last one on a page. That means basically, that getting into those top three spots is the most important thing you can do. Pay-per-click, is not only less effective, but it appears to be dropping in overall effectiveness. It is to say that less and less people are clicking on ads.

I’m not saying you should do ppc, but, let’s be honest, if you want to allocate your resources well, SEO is a great place to begin.
